It is good to know how wifi developed and understand its history. The telecoms regulator, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decide to free some of the wireless spectrum namely 900 Mhz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz in 1985. These were called garbage bands. The authorities also ruled that the wireless devices should not interfere with one another. Lots of devices make use of these so called garbage bands from cordless phones to microwave ovens. The problem was the proprietary hardware produced by individual companies could not work with one another. A new market could be created if a standard existed. The industry was inspired by the success of ethernet. All the parties took a long time to agreed on the standard as consensus had to be reached with at least 75% of the members. Finally, only in 1997 was the specification agreed upon. The interference problem was solved by the use of spread spectrum technology. There are two types . One in which the radio signal jumped between the the radio frequencies and the other in which the radio signal was spread out in the wide range of frequencies. This technology began in the military and not only does it prevent interference it also prevents interception.
The first tech company to adopt this technology was Apple and its iBook incorporated wifi slot in July 1999. Apple branded the wireless technology as AirPort. It was immensely successful and other companies follow suit. Another development which trigger the explosive growth was the introduction of broadband technology into homes. Everyone in the family could share the broadband access. The only problem lay in the networking of all the separate devices. Wifi cut through this problem by doing away with installation and extension of cable points and hacking of walls.
Now even cities are thinking of implementing wifi hot spots. Philadelphia and Amsterdam are turning themselves into one giant hotspot. The city areas are about 220 square kilometres. Consumers will get cheap wireless internet access anywhere in the city.New applications like Wifi phones which exploit this wireless technology will bound to send shivers down the cellular phone operators. There are still constraints like the limited distances , power consumption and security concerns. A new technology in the works WiMax is designed to have data transfer speed of 70 megabits per second and its coverage is 50 km instead of the current 50 m for Wifi. So look forward to the future, where making a wireless call will be much much cheaper.
