Inkjet photo printers

The basic inkjet photo printers would have 4 colors. The 4 colors are cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

The better inkjet photo printers would have 6 colors  consisting of the above mentioned as well as light cyan and light magenta giving even better quality and more realistic photos.

How do these inkjet photo printers work?

These photo printers push out tiny ink droplets from the nozzles. These droplets form the image.

It is also a good idea to consider ink jet printers that carry single colour ink tanks for each individual color. This helps considerably if you are using a much greater volume of a particular color. This helps to cut down wastage as only the specified ink tank gets changed upon full consumption. Cartridges containing all the colours would need to be removed even when one colour is used up.

Dye-sublimation photo printers

Dye-sublimation photo printers uses heat to transfer the ink from ribbons to the paper. The result? Quality that is near what you'd get from a professional photo lab. Dye-sublimation printer typically prints 4R sizes and are generally much slower than ink jet printers.

Photo printer features

You can hook a digital camera to your photo printer and print out your photos. 6 major manufacturers are developing a standard, the Direct Printing Standard (launched in December 2002)  where all their digital cameras can hook up to the different photo printers. They are Sony, Canon, Epson, Fujifilm, Olympus and HP.

Some photo printers have media slot which accepts all kinds of media. Be it compact flash, multi-media or secure digital

Most photo printers which let you hook up the digital camera directly to the photo printer, can provide you an index sheet that shows all the photos you have taken.

Another helpful feature is the lcd screen, so you can actually preview and edit a photo, choose the size, resolution and so forth before you actually print the photo.

Look out for photo inkjet printers which have borderless print capabilities too.

Connectivity of photo printers

Right now, photo printers can be hooked up to the pc via parallel port or the usb port.

Go for the usb port, especially the usb 2.0 as it is much faster than the parallel port or lower usb versions.

Resolution of photo printers

The image resolution depends on the number of dots per inch. The higher the number, the better the resolution.

Typical specs for inkjet photo printers will show as 2,4000  x 1,200 dpi. Use the first number for the primary print resolution. You need at least  720 dpi. For better picture quality opt for 2,400 dpi.

Dye-sublimation printers generally have much lower resolution than inkjet photo printers. A typical resolution would be 300 dpi. Don't worry. The picture quality will be as good as ink jet photo printers with much higher resolution if not even better.

Another important element is the droplet size. The smaller the ink droplet, the sharper the image, the better the picture. Look for inkjet photo printers offering a maximum of 4 picoliters. If you can get 2 picoliters inkjet photo printers, that would be even better.

Printers with higher resolution cost much more. These higher resolution printers also consume much more ink as well as requires a longer time to process prints.
