Home TheaterHow do you choose your home theater? DVD is very good for you home theater. DVD technology provides digital sound, better resolution than video tapes or VCD. The DVD itself can contain director's cut, supports multi-language and more. To set up a home theater, you need a display monitor, a dvd player and a surround sound speaker system. How to choose a DVD player? You want a DVD player with Progressive Scan capability. Progressive Scan provides a better quality image. What formats do the DVD players support? It depends on what you want. The basic ones can support DVDs and audio CDs. The mid range ones can support CD-Rs, MP3s as well as the DVDs and audio CDs. The high end ones can support the high end formats like SACD (Super audio CD) and DVD Audio. Do you want multi disc player or a single disc player? If you wish to play CDs, then you might consider the multi-disc player. Other than that, the single disc player would do fine. You should also look for the video output. The dvd players should come with Composite video output as well as S-Video output to hook up to the TV. Use the S Video output as it gives a much better picture resolution and image quality on TV. The top end dvd players would have this component video output which comes with 4 ports which are red, green, blue ports and brightness jacks. It provides the highest image quality and best colour reproduction.
Audio for your home theaterSurround sound system consists of 5 speakers and 1 sub woofer. 3 speakers in front of the person watching the TV, 1 left, 1 right, 1 center and 2 speakers by his side. The subwoofer is behind him. The DVDs come encoded with Dhoby Digital technology, so make sure that your DVD player has Dhoby Digital technology too. Other surround sound format is DTS. You may want to get a set that has DTS as some DVDs come with this technology as well. Lastly, there is THX by Lucas industry. This is not so common. Very few DVDs come with this technology. Receiver for your home theaterThe receiver decodes, amplifies and sends the multi-channel analog signal to the speakers. So the back of the receiver should have as many ports as possible to hook up to the speakers. For those who are not so fussy, you can hook the DVD player audio output directly to your Hi-Fi system or your TV with built-in speakers. Some of the DVD players may even have the digital decoding which bypasses the receiver, so the receiver may not be necessary for such DVD players.
