We are familiar with fax machines. It complements the email. You needed to wait for each faxing to be done for cheaper and older fax machines before you could continue with the next faxing job.Better fax machines allowed you to scan your document into its memory and the fax machine would automatically keep dialing the telephone number until it was successful. The fax machine is a pretty amazing technology allowing you to transmit both pictures and text using the phone line. In fact it was invented long ago in 1843 by Alexander Bain. It became popular only in the eighties and nineties after a standard protoccol for transmitting the fax at 9,600 bps was agreed upon in 1983.
How does the fax machine work? It has a scanner with a horizontal resolution of 203 pixels per inch. If you look carefully at a line in a page, you would observe the line would either cut across the black text or blank spots. The scanner then determines whether that spot of paper is white or black. The information is then encoded and is represented as a bit. And each line is representated by 1,728 bits. The fax machine also makes use of compression technology that allows one line to be represented and transmitted by a dozen bits if that particular line is all white or black. The receiving fax then decodes and uncompresses the bits and translates data into black or white and forms the text or pictures.
The fax machine has still been proven useful. Have you ever regret sending that important letter of yours using email because of spelling errors and incorrect data or information? When faxing , you need a hard copy of your document and this allows you to pause for a while and you check its content before faxing it out. Major contracts need to be signed and confirmation requires a document to be signed and faxed. You don't normally sign an email. Two parties can easily vet a long contract by fax. Both parties can check and delete or amend clauses and statements. You can't do that with emails. Another bugbear of emails is the regular occurence of failure of opening the file attachments. People who do not want to leave electronic trace of messages or documents sent would prefer to send by fax and the documents can be shredded or torn apart with no further evidence of it. Lastly, not everyone have access to email especially developing countries and therefore communication by fax is still the norm.
