Computer Upgrades

Should you buy a new computer or would computer upgrades be the better choice?

How do you know you need to upgrade your computer?

bulletNo more space to store your files.
bulletApplications run very slow.
bulletCannot open huge files that you need to process.
bulletYou plan to use your computer to play the latest games, but the pc just cannot take it.
bulletInternet surfing is so slow.
bulletVideo editing is slow.

What should you do?

Should you buy a new PC, or simply upgrade your old PC?

How old is your PC?

If your PC is more than 3 years old, or it is a 486 or a Pentium 1 or below, it is probably time to get a new PC.

Virtually old the components in these old PCs need to be changed.

You may not even be able to upgrade these old PCs

Some of these computers may have proprietary hardware and software, so you can't upgrade these yourself.

Benefits of upgrading

The most obvious benefit is the cost savings.

You can upgrade the

bulletRAM
bulletHard Disk
bulletVideo graphics board
bulletCD-ROM to a CD-RW or even a DVD-RW drive
bulletSound card

at a lower cost than buying a new PC

You can do this in phases. Do the upgrades as and when you need them. Only upgrade when you need these features.

RAM upgrades would speed up applications significantly. With more RAM, you can also open larger files which would hang a PC with a smaller RAM.

Hard Disk upgrades are worthwhile too. Especially if you use large files, graphics, store digital photos and music in your PC. You can get a huge hard disk of as much as 180 GB at a very affordable price.

Video graphics board upgrades give you better video quality which gamers love.

File transfer and software installation

One major benefit of upgrading your PC instead of buying a new one is that you do not need to transfer your files over to your new PC and reinstalling all the software all over again.

That reinstallation of software into your new PC can be a major headache, if you have already installed all sorts of software and configured your PC to suit your needs exactly.
