How do you get from point A to point B ? Travellers have been using compasses, maps and the stars to direct them to the point of destination. Now with a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, you can find out where you are and find your way to the destination. GPS depends on an array of satellites orbiting in the sky. There are 24 satellites involve in the global positioning system with an additional three satellite on standby should any others fail.So how the heck do you locate your position with a GPS receiver on the ground? Well, the concept here relies on timing. Each satellite has a clock and the signal is sent to you the time on your GPS receiver is slower due to the distance travelled between you and the satellite. Distance is calculated by multiplying the speed of light with the time taken to arrive at the solution of distance. This still doesn't tell you where you are. Your GPS receiver takes another reading from a second satellite which tells you how far you are from the second satellite. This again also can't tell you where you are. But by finding how far you are from the third satellite allows you to find out where you are. There will be a common point where all the distances of all the three satellites must meet and therefore provide you with the specific location.
The clocks in the both satellites and the GPS receiver must be super accurate and must be synchronized to the nanosecond. That's why atomic clocks are utilised in the satellites. You don't find these in GPS receivers because they cost too much, around $100,000. Accuracy in the GPS therefore relies on taking a fourth satellite reading which enable it to gauge the amount of inaccuracy of timing.
The atmosphere also affects the data reading as ionosphere and troposphere slows down the light electromagnetic wave energy. Another factor is the satellite signal bouncing off building which increases the time taken and give false reading. So what is the application of this technology? It can help the hiker find his way. Pilots also make use of it. Transport companies like taxis and commercial vehicles deploy this technology to keep track of movement of these vehicles for the better utillistaion of resources. Prisons may keep track of prisoners using these technology too. In the future, cars will be intelligent enough to tell the authorities where you are in a crash and to quickly attend to you in the emergency.
