You got a kid or two and you want to cherish those memories of you spending time with them either on holidays, special events or just ordinary daily activites. You can make a great home video all by yourself. All you need is a digital video camcorder, personal computer and video editing software. And now these software have improved and it is easy to edit your movies. You want to transfer your video footage quickly to your PC and at the same time you do not want to compromise the quality of your video. You need to install Firewire card on your PC. Videos consume huge amount of data, so make your PC has plenty of hard disk space. You must have lots Processing power too so that writing or reading from the hard disk can be fast and also video frames will not get lost.
Here are some tips to improve your home video making. Plan your story on a storyboard so that you have a idea of what you want to do. Remember to hold your camera very still othewise you get very amateurish videos. Investing in a good tripod is a good idea. You don't want to cut away too quickly from one scene but then again you don't want the whole family to get bored. Make sure when you shoot the scene a second time there should be continuity. You will be embarrassed if one scene shows a guy wearing a watch and it gets missing in the next. I hope you get the idea. You don't have to have the footage using the same angle all the time. Try filming with a bird's eye view or even a worm's eye view. This will be more interesting. You can also close up to see the subject's faces.
If you notice carefully what holds a viewer or audience's attention is the use of music. Nothing works better than great music to your video footage. SO add music to your movie or better still , sound effects too. If you want to hear the subjects speaking , it is also wise to use a quiet environment. Of course , you can consider dubbing voices if the voices in the actual setting is poor. Last but not least, consider using an extra microphone as the built in microphone in the camcorder is insufficient.
